Varanasi Police Unveils Pioneering Women Commando Platoon for Republic Day Celebrations
In a groundbreaking move, Varanasi Police is set to showcase its first-ever all-women commando platoon during the Republic Day parade at Police Lines on Monday. This elite unit, clad in distinctive black uniforms, represents a strategic response to the rising incidents of aggressive protests led by women, aiming to enhance law enforcement capabilities in handling such volatile situations.
Strategic Initiative to Combat Violent Protests
Police Commissioner Mohit Agrawal emphasized the necessity of this specialized force, stating, "In view of increasing incidents of aggressive protests by women, the need was realized for a specialized force to tackle the situation, leading to the development of this women commando unit." The initiative, launched at the commissionerate level, began with a carefully selected team of 25 women personnel, equipped with uniforms, anti-riot gear, safety kits, and advanced gadgets modeled after state police and central paramilitary commandos.
Rigorous Training and Future Plans
The initial training for this pioneering batch was conducted locally, but Commissioner Agrawal revealed ambitious plans for further development. "We will soon try to arrange slots with premium commando units like ATS and NSG for their advanced training," he added, underscoring the commitment to honing their skills. The selection process was highly competitive, with officials prioritizing candidates based on optimal height, physical strength, and IQ from a pool of 300 policewomen, ensuring only the most capable underwent the tough training sessions.
Republic Day Showcase and Public Awareness
The Republic Day parade will serve as a platform to introduce this women commando unit to the public, dedicated to ‘Mission Shakti’—a symbol of empowerment and resilience. During a full dress rehearsal on Sunday, the agility and precision displayed by these commandos in their black uniforms were not only impressive but also provided a tangible demonstration of their effectiveness, particularly in managing violent mob scenarios where women are often at the forefront.
Special Recognition and Operational Structure
Among 16 diverse contingents, including horse riders, bikers, fire brigade, and bomb disposal squads, the women commandos are expected to be a major attraction. In a gesture of appreciation, Police Commissioner Agrawal announced that a special lunch will be hosted in honor of these trailblazing women, followed by a screening of the recently released film ‘Border 2’. Operationally, the unit will be under the command of Additional Police Commissioner Shivhari Meena, who will oversee their regular training, weapon allocation, and operational duties, ensuring they remain a formidable force in Varanasi's policing landscape.
