The figures reveal a worrying trend, with the number of road accidents increasing by 10.2% and fatalities rising by 12.8% compared to the statistics from 2024. This continues an upward trajectory that has been observed since 2022, highlighting persistent challenges in road safety across the state.

  • Aligarh
  • Mathura
  • Lucknow

Bareilly Emerges as a Notable Exception

In a positive development amidst the overall grim scenario, Bareilly district has emerged as a huge exception in the 2025 data. The district reported 245 fewer road accidents in 2025 compared to 2024, marking a substantial drop of 20.5%. Specifically, the number of accidents decreased from 1,196 in 2024 to 951 in 2025.

Furthermore, Bareilly recorded 96 fewer deaths in 2025, a reduction of 19.2%. The fatalities declined from 500 in 2024 to 404 in 2025. Additionally, the number of people injured in road accidents saw a significant decrease, with 848 injuries in 2025 against 1,160 in 2024, which is 30% less.

Increase in Accidents and Deaths in Other Districts

In contrast to Bareilly, nine other districts among the top ten recorded an increase in the number of road accidents in 2025. The data shows:

  • Prayagraj reported 1,477 road accidents resulting in 739 deaths.
  • Aligarh recorded 1,241 accidents claiming 603 lives.
  • Agra saw 1,456 accidents with 748 fatalities.
  • Unnao registered 1,045 accidents leading to 631 deaths.
  • Mathura experienced 1,210 accidents and 698 deaths.

Among the other districts, Lucknow reported 1,714 road accidents and 660 deaths in 2025, while Kanpur registered 1,458 accidents and 607 fatalities. The data also indicated an increase in the number of road accidents and deaths in districts such as Mainpuri, Sitapur, and Rae Bareli during the same period.

Ongoing Concerns and Future Implications

The persistent rise in road accidents and fatalities in Uttar Pradesh since 2022 underscores the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations. While Bareilly's improvement offers a glimmer of hope, the overall trend calls for comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of these accidents, including infrastructure upgrades, public awareness campaigns, and better emergency response systems.
