Police in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj district have taken decisive action following serious allegations of unlawful religious conversion activities. On Tuesday, authorities detained four individuals and formally registered a case against a total of eleven people after a complaint alleged that a religious gathering was being exploited to lure vulnerable individuals into changing their religion through promises of financial assistance and other benefits.

The case was officially registered at the Sadar Kotwali police station based on a detailed complaint filed by Ambareesh Sharma, who serves as the district convenor (Goraksh province) of the Hindu Jagran Manch. According to Sharma's complaint, the alleged incident occurred on Sunday in the Kanjar Basti area of Indiranagar, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Sadar Kotwali police station.
Sharma specifically alleged that preachers from outside the district were organizing weekly gatherings known as 'Changai Sabhas' with the explicit purpose of converting people belonging to Scheduled Tribes and economically weaker sections to Christianity. The complaint detailed that these conversions were being facilitated through promises of financial assistance and various other benefits, creating what Sharma described as a "well-planned attempt at religious conversion" targeting the most vulnerable segments of society.
Police Response and Investigation
According to the complaint documentation, Sharma received information from local workers about the alleged conversion activities. He subsequently arrived at the location along with approximately 20-25 members of the Hindu Jagran Manch organization, including the town unit president Anand Agrahari, to investigate the matter firsthand.
Upon confirming the allegations, police were immediately notified about the gathering. A dedicated team from the Sadar Kotwali police station promptly reached the location and initiated thorough enquiries into the matter. The police investigation confirmed the basic allegations outlined in the complaint, leading to the registration of a formal First Information Report (FIR).
Legal Charges and Accused Individuals
The FIR has been registered against eleven specifically named individuals: Sanjay, Vijay, Vishal, Karan, Balle, Anita, Hajari, Sunil, Munni, Bitiya, and Panma. Additionally, the case includes charges against other individuals whose identities are yet to be verified by investigating authorities.
All accused have been booked under the stringent provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021.
