Uttar Pradesh Man Arrested in Kerala for String of Scooter Thefts Using Duplicate Keys
A 34-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh has been apprehended by authorities in Kerala for allegedly orchestrating a series of thefts by employing duplicate keys to access two-wheelers and pilfer valuable items. The arrest sheds light on a sophisticated criminal operation spanning multiple states.
Investigation Triggered by Exam Day Theft
The case came to the forefront on March 14 when a young individual from Thrissur district lodged a formal complaint with the Aluva police. The victim reported that while he was taking an examination at a center in Aluva, his belongings were stolen from his parked scooter. He had securely placed his purse and mobile phone inside the vehicle's storage compartment, only to discover upon his return that the compartment was open and his possessions were missing.
In a distressing turn of events, when the victim contacted his bank to block his cards, he learned that a substantial sum of Rs 65,000 had already been withdrawn from his account. This financial loss prompted a thorough investigation by law enforcement officials.
Modus Operandi Unveiled
Investigators uncovered a calculated method employed by the accused. He utilized duplicate keys to unlock the storage compartments of scooters, targeting mobile phones, wallets, cash, and debit or credit cards. Following the theft, he would extract the SIM cards from the stolen phones and insert them into another device. This allowed him to reset ATM PINs and subsequently withdraw money from the victims' accounts.
Police noted that the phone used for inserting SIM cards was specifically not utilized for making calls, indicating a deliberate effort to avoid detection. This tactic highlights the accused's awareness of digital forensics and his attempts to cover his tracks.
Widespread Criminal Activity Across States
The accused, identified as Imran Khan, a native of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, is suspected of involvement in similar thefts across various locations. These include Aluva, Kollam, and Thrissur in Kerala, as well as parts of Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. His constant mobility made it challenging for authorities to track his movements, complicating the investigation.
Investigators revealed that he was in Bhopal on March 23 and Coimbatore on March 27 before arriving in Kochi, demonstrating a pattern of interstate travel to evade capture.
Arrest and Recovery of Evidence
The breakthrough came on Sunday night when the Aluva police arrested Imran Khan from a lodge near the Vyttila Mobility Hub in Kochi. He was allegedly in the process of planning another theft at the time of his apprehension. From his possession, police recovered approximately 10 duplicate two-wheeler keys, three mobile phones, and several wallets, providing tangible evidence of his illicit activities.
Following his arrest, the accused was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody. The recovery of duplicate keys and stolen items underscores the extent of his operations and the potential threat he posed to vehicle owners in the region.
