In a shocking incident stemming from opposition to an interfaith relationship, the Pune City Police have apprehended two individuals for the alleged murder of a 34-year-old man. The crime, which took place in the Ambegaon Budruk area, has been linked directly to the victim's romantic involvement with the sister of one of the accused.
The Fatal Confrontation and Immediate Aftermath
According to police officials, the deceased has been identified as Javed Pathan, a native of Bhokar in Maharashtra's Nanded district who worked at an automobile servicing centre in Pune. The accused have been named as Sandip Rangrao Bhurke (25) and Omprakash alias Datta Ganesh Kirkan (20), also hailing from Bhokar in Nanded.
The investigation reveals that Pathan was in a relationship with Bhurke's sister for several years, a union that Bhurke strongly disapproved of. The situation reached a violent climax on the evening of December 22. Police stated that Bhurke, who worked as a private security guard in Pune, along with his accomplice Kirkan, went to meet Pathan. Following heated arguments, the duo allegedly attacked Pathan with sharp weapons around 6:45 PM, leading to his death. The assailants subsequently fled the scene.
Police Investigation and Arrest
A complaint was lodged at the Ambegaon police station by Pathan's relative, Rauf Usman Shaikh (35). Based on this, an FIR for murder was registered, and a search operation was launched. Probe findings indicated that the accused had fled to their native place in Nanded.
A dedicated police team, comprising sub-inspector Mohan Kalamkar and constables Chetan More, Nilesh Jamdade, and Harish Gaikwad, laid a trap and successfully nabbed the accused from Nanded on Thursday. During interrogation, Bhurke confessed to the murder, citing his opposition to the relationship as the motive. Police further disclosed that Pathan and Bhurke's sister had been living together in Pune's Narhe area for a few days prior to the incident.
Legal Proceedings and Custody
The two arrested individuals were produced before a court in Pune. Sharad Zine, the senior inspector at Ambegaon police station, confirmed that the court has remanded the accused to police custody until January 1 to facilitate further investigation into the case.
This tragic event highlights the severe and sometimes fatal consequences of societal and familial intolerance towards personal relationships, particularly those crossing religious boundaries.
