Two Separate Fatal Accidents Rock Gurgaon on Wednesday
Gurgaon witnessed two tragic road accidents on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of a 56-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in the city.
Man Dies in Expressway Accident Near Hero Honda Chowk
In the first incident, Rajesh Kumar, a 56-year-old resident of Feroz Gandhi Colony in Gurgaon and a native of Uttar Pradesh, lost his life in an accident on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway near Hero Honda Chowk. The tragedy occurred around 5 PM on Wednesday evening.
Kumar had left his workplace at HGS India Limited in IMT Manesar and was on his way home when the incident took place on the main road in front of the Holiday Inn on Khandsa Road. He was riding a scooter at the time.
Police officials stated that it is yet to be determined whether Kumar was hit by another vehicle or lost control of his scooter and fell. "No eyewitness has come forward so far. We are examining CCTV footage from nearby establishments and from the highway to determine the sequence of events," an officer said.
A preliminary inquiry revealed that Kumar fell near a narrow drain located between the service road and the main carriageway. He sustained a head injury after coming into contact with an iron crash barrier placed beside the drain.
"There is a narrow drain between the service road and the main road. An iron crash barrier is placed next to it. He appears to have suffered a head injury after coming into contact with it," the officer explained, adding that passers-by alerted the authorities after seeing him lying on the road.
Kumar was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A post-mortem examination was conducted, and the body was subsequently handed over to his family for last rites.
Woman Killed by Garbage Vehicle in Sector 61
In a separate and equally tragic incident, a 42-year-old woman named Lalita Aditya was killed on Ullawas Road in Sector 61 on Wednesday afternoon. The accident involved a garbage collection pick-up vehicle that veered off the road and struck her.
Lalita Aditya, the wife of Dronacharya Aditya, was a native of West Bengal and lived in Ullawas. She worked as a labourer and was on her way to Ullawas market around noon when the accident occurred.
"She was walking on the footpath. The vehicle moved towards the edge of the road and hit her," an officer said. Police further noted that there were no CCTV cameras at the exact spot of the accident, but a preliminary inquiry suggested that the vehicle was moving at high speed.
The driver fled the scene immediately after the incident. The pick-up vehicle was later seized by authorities, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest the driver. Legal proceedings have been initiated under sections 281 and 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which relate to rash driving and causing death by negligence.
Ongoing Investigations and Safety Concerns
Both accidents have prompted police investigations to ascertain the exact causes and hold responsible parties accountable. The lack of eyewitnesses in the first case and the absence of CCTV footage in the second pose challenges for law enforcement.
These incidents underscore critical issues related to road safety in Gurgaon, including:
- Inadequate infrastructure, such as narrow drains and crash barriers on busy expressways.
- Reckless driving behaviors, particularly involving commercial vehicles.
- Gaps in surveillance and witness cooperation that hinder accident investigations.
Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution on roads and report any relevant information to assist in these cases. The community mourns the loss of both individuals, with families left to cope with the sudden tragedies.
