Tripura Community in Delhi Demands Justice for Brutally Assaulted Student
The Tripura community residing in Delhi has raised its voice in a unified demand for the strictest possible punishment for the accused involved in the heinous assault of a 19-year-old undergraduate Bio-Tech engineering student from the state. The young woman, whose identity is being protected, has been fighting for her life at Safdarjung Hospital for the past five days following a brutal attack that allegedly occurred in Gurugram.
Details of the Horrific Incident
According to police reports, the accused, identified as 23-year-old Shivam, has been taken into custody. Initial investigations have revealed that the victim and the accused were in a romantic relationship and were living together prior to this tragic incident. The victim's mother provided harrowing details, stating that her daughter was held against her will and subjected to continuous torture for three days at her rented accommodation.
The incident came to light on February 18 at approximately 10 PM when the victim made a desperate call to her mother after being admitted to a hospital. In that call, the victim expressed grave fear for her life, revealing that Shivam had assaulted her repeatedly until she managed to seek medical help.
Severity of Injuries and Community Outrage
The victim reported to authorities that the accused confined her to a room, subjected her to severe physical abuse, inflicted burn wounds, and attacked her with a sharp object. The extent of her injuries, resulting from repeated torture, has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation across communities.
Her parents traveled to Delhi the following day and lodged a formal police complaint, seeking justice for their daughter. The brutal nature of the assault has highlighted serious concerns about women's safety, particularly for those who migrate from their home states for education or employment opportunities.
Political Response and Community Protests
Reacting strongly to the incident, former Union minister of state from Tripura, Pratima Bhowmik, visited the hospital in Delhi to meet the victim and her family. Bhowmik condemned the crime in the strongest terms, asserting that the accused should face the harshest possible punishment without any delay or prolonged legal procedures.
"The victim told me that during the assault, Shivam admitted to committing similar acts against two other women. Such a person should not be allowed to remain free in society," Bhowmik stated, even suggesting accountability for his parents. She urged authorities to ensure no legal loopholes could grant him release.
The horrifying case has ignited widespread anger among members of the Tripura community in Delhi and Haryana. Demonstrations have been organized to demand justice for the victim and stringent punishment for the perpetrator. Protesters are also calling for stronger measures to ensure the safety of women, with particular emphasis on students and professionals who relocate from northeastern states.
Calls for Inter-State Cooperation
The community has urgently appealed to Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha to engage with his counterparts in Haryana and Delhi to address the safety and security concerns of Tripura students studying in these states. This incident has underscored the vulnerability of students who leave their home states for educational pursuits and the need for coordinated protection mechanisms across state boundaries.
As the victim continues her battle for recovery in the hospital, the Tripura community remains united in its demand for justice, hoping this tragic case will lead to concrete improvements in safety protocols for all students and working professionals from the region.
