A shocking incident of chain snatching turned into a dramatic scene on a bridge in Trichy, resulting in injuries for a couple and the alleged perpetrator himself. The event unfolded on Friday night on the Aristo bridge, where a 27-year-old man attempted to steal a handbag from a woman riding pillion with her husband.
The Fateful Temple Return and Attack
The victims, identified as K Sridharan, 58, and Selvi, 48, from Edamalaipatti Pudur, were returning home on their motorcycle after visiting a temple in Woraiyur. As they were crossing the Aristo bridge, the accused, S Abdul Rahman from Lalgudi in Trichy district, who was trailing them on another bike, made his move. He attempted to snatch Selvi's handbag, leading to a struggle.
Selvi's resistance caused her to fall off the moving motorcycle. Seeing this, her husband Sridharan tried to pursue the snatcher but lost control of his own vehicle and also fell, with both sustaining injuries in the process.
A Painful and Failed Escape Attempt
In a desperate bid to flee the scene, Abdul Rahman abandoned the motorcycle he was riding. His escape plan took a drastic turn when he decided to jump from the 20-foot-high Aristo bridge. The leap did not go as planned; he landed badly and fractured his left ankle, effectively immobilizing himself.
Alert passersby who witnessed the chaotic sequence of events quickly apprehended the injured snatcher. They then handed him over to the Cantonment police, ensuring he could not escape despite his earlier efforts.
Aftermath and Legal Action
All three individuals involved—the injured couple and the accused Abdul Rahman—were taken to Trichy Government Hospital (GH) for medical treatment. The police have registered a formal case against Abdul Rahman. He has been booked under Section 309 (6) of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with attempt to commit an offence. The Cantonment police are conducting a thorough investigation into the entire incident.
