Transgender Files FIR Against Brother for AI-Doctored Video Involving NCP Minister
In a significant development in Mumbai, a transgender person has officially lodged a First Information Report (FIR) with the police against her own brother. The complaint alleges that the brother doctored an old video using artificial intelligence to create a threatening situation. This video, which went viral last week, features Narhari Zirwal, a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) minister, alongside the transgender individual in a bedroom at his official residence.
Details of the Controversial Video and Police Action
The controversy erupted when the video surfaced online, showing Zirwal with the transgender person in what appeared to be a private setting. Following its viral spread, the transgender complainant approached the Marine Drive police station to provide a detailed statement. Based on this, an FIR was registered, and the case has since been transferred to the Cuffe Parade police station. This transfer was necessary because Zirwal's official residence falls under the jurisdiction of the Cuffe Parade station, ensuring proper legal handling of the matter.
Narhari Zirwal, who is a four-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Dindori Assembly constituency, found himself embroiled in this scandal as the video gained traction on social media platforms. The incident has raised questions about privacy and the misuse of technology in political contexts.
Allegations of Extortion and AI Manipulation
According to the FIR, the complainant's brother allegedly used AI technology to alter the old video, creating a manipulated version that he then used to threaten her. The accused had been persistently asking his sister to assist him in securing a job within the FDA department, which is under Minister Zirwal's purview. When his demands were not met, he reportedly threatened to release the doctored video publicly unless he was either given the job or paid a sum of money.
This case highlights growing concerns over the use of AI for creating deepfakes and other forms of digital manipulation, which can be exploited for extortion and defamation. The transgender person's decision to file an FIR underscores the seriousness of the threats and the potential legal repercussions for such actions.
Police Investigation and Ongoing Probe
A police officer involved in the case confirmed that an investigation is currently underway. "We are probing the case thoroughly to uncover all facts and evidence related to the allegations," the officer stated. The probe will likely focus on verifying the authenticity of the video, examining the AI doctoring claims, and assessing the extortion threats made by the brother.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to gather digital evidence and interview relevant parties to build a comprehensive case. This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by technological advancements in law enforcement and the need for robust legal frameworks to address digital crimes.
