A driver and his two aides allegedly assaulted a traffic police constable in Kalyan on Saturday after being asked to move their car, which was causing a traffic bottleneck. The incident occurred on Kalyan-Malang Road in Nandivli, where constable Devidas Waghere was managing heavy traffic.
Details of the Incident
Constable Waghere noticed a parked car worsening the traffic situation and requested the driver to move it. The driver reportedly lost his temper and, along with two accomplices, began arguing with the constable. The situation quickly escalated, and the trio allegedly abused and assaulted Waghere in full public view. A video of the attack circulated widely on social media.
Police Response
Hemant Gaurav, senior inspector at Kolsewadi police station, confirmed that an FIR has been filed against the alleged assailants. They were served a notice and released as the offense carries a jail term of less than seven years. Gaurav stated, 'The preliminary inquiry indicates that the dispute began after the constable asked the accused to move their car, which was adding to an already severe jam. The three became aggressive; they verbally abused the constable and then assaulted him.'
Rising Attacks on Traffic Police
Police sources revealed that this is the third such attack on traffic police personnel in the Kalyan area in recent months. The repeated incidents have raised concerns about the safety of traffic constables who often face aggressive behavior while performing their duties. Authorities are urging stricter action to deter such assaults.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by traffic police in managing congestion and enforcing rules, particularly when drivers react violently to routine requests. The Kolsewadi police are investigating the case further.
