Tourist Car Crash Ignites Transformer Fire in Calangute
A major incident unfolded in the early hours of Thursday when a tourist vehicle from Gujarat collided with a roadside electricity transformer in Calangute, sparking a significant fire. The accident occurred at Naika Vaddo, Calangute, just after 4am, causing substantial damage to the transformer owned by the electricity department.
Firefighters Respond Swiftly to Early Morning Blaze
Officials from the Pilerne fire station reported receiving an emergency call at 4.30am. Fire crews rushed to the scene on the Calangute-Candolim road, where they worked to extinguish the flames. Fortunately, the fire had already been brought under control by the time they arrived, preventing further escalation.
The driver of the Gujarat-registered car was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. According to initial reports, the vehicle first struck a parked car before veering into the transformer, causing the electrical equipment to catch fire. One occupant of the tourist car sustained injuries in the collision.
Second Early Morning Accident Injures Five Tourists
In a separate but related incident on the same morning, a two-wheeler crashed into a group of tourists walking across the Baga-Arpora road. This accident resulted in injuries to five tourists, adding to the series of unfortunate events in the popular coastal area.
Local police have taken swift action by registering two separate cases against those involved in both incidents. The investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances and potential charges.
These back-to-back accidents highlight growing concerns about road safety in tourist-heavy areas of Goa, particularly during early morning hours when visibility may be reduced and some drivers may be impaired.
