Third Firing Incident in a Week Shakes Chandigarh, Juvenile Arrested After Shooting at Friend

In a disturbing escalation of violence, Chandigarh witnessed its third shooting incident in less than a week when a 16-year-old boy opened fire at his friend in Sector 38-A on Sunday evening. The assailant was apprehended within two hours, with police recovering a country-made pistol from his possession.

Swift Police Action in Sector 38-A Case

According to Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, a PCR call reporting the firing was received at 4:51 PM, prompting immediate deployment of police teams to House No. 79 in Sector 38-A. The victim, also a juvenile, was visiting his uncle when the attack occurred on the road. Acting on CCTV footage and manual intelligence, authorities swiftly arrested the accused juvenile. SSP Kaur stated that the motive behind the firing was a prior altercation between the two juveniles, and fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident.

Series of Shootings Raise Alarm Over Law and Order

This latest event adds to a string of violent episodes that have plagued the Union Territory in recent days, casting a shadow over public safety. The most severe incident occurred on March 18, when property dealer Chamanpreet Singh, alias Chini, was brutally murdered in broad daylight outside Bodyzone Gym in Sector 9. Two unidentified gunmen on a scooter fired approximately 11 bullets into Singh, who was seated in his SUV. Reports indicate he had been receiving extortion threats prior to the attack.

In a separate incident around the same time, another shooting was reported at Panjab University, further heightening tensions. The UT police demonstrated rapid response in the Sector 9 murder case, arresting two key suspects—Piyush Pehelwan from Ferozepur and Pritam Shah from Nawanshahr—within 30 hours. Their capture followed a brief encounter with the Punjab AGTF in Kaithal, Haryana. Both individuals are identified as close associates of fugitive gangster Lucky Patial from the Bambiha gang, with the weapon and motorcycle used in the crime successfully recovered.

Mounting Security Concerns in the City

While the Sector 38-A firing resulted in no casualties, it has intensified growing security worries among residents. The recurrence of such incidents within a short span underscores challenges in maintaining law and order in Chandigarh. Authorities are under pressure to address these threats and restore public confidence, as the city grapples with this spike in criminal activity linked to both juvenile disputes and organized gang involvement.
