A case has been registered against a Shiv Sena corporator and five others for allegedly assaulting and abusing doctors at a hospital in Thane, Maharashtra. The incident occurred late Wednesday night at the Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar, following a dispute over the treatment of a patient.
Details of the Assault
According to the police, the corporator, identified as Mahesh Gaikwad, along with his associates, entered the hospital and confronted the medical staff. The accused allegedly used abusive language and physically assaulted the doctors on duty. The altercation reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over the medical care provided to a relative of one of the accused.
The police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including assault, criminal intimidation, and wrongful restraint. The accused have been charged with voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from performing their duty, as well as other offenses.
Hospital Staff Shocked
Hospital authorities confirmed that the incident has left the medical staff shaken. Dr. Ramesh Patil, a senior physician at the hospital, stated, "We were simply doing our duty, but we were met with aggression and abuse. Such incidents create a sense of fear among healthcare workers." The doctors have demanded strict action against the perpetrators to ensure their safety.
Police Investigation Underway
Senior Inspector Sunil Pawar of the Ulhasnagar police station said, "We have registered a case against six individuals, including the corporator. Investigations are ongoing, and we are gathering evidence, including CCTV footage from the hospital." The police have assured that all necessary legal steps will be taken.
Political Reactions
The incident has sparked condemnation from various political quarters. The Shiv Sena party has yet to issue an official statement, but local party members have distanced themselves from the act. Opposition leaders have called for the corporator's arrest and demanded a thorough inquiry. The Maharashtra Medical Council has also taken note of the incident and urged the government to provide better security for healthcare professionals.
Impact on Healthcare Workers
This assault highlights the ongoing challenges faced by medical staff in India, who often work under stressful conditions. According to a 2023 survey by the Indian Medical Association, nearly 75% of doctors have experienced some form of violence at their workplace. Such incidents not only affect the morale of healthcare workers but also compromise patient care. The Thane hospital incident has reignited calls for stricter laws to protect medical personnel.
Legal and Administrative Measures
The Maharashtra government has in the past enacted the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act, which prescribes stringent punishment for those attacking healthcare workers. However, implementation remains a challenge. In this case, the police have assured that the law will take its course. The hospital administration has also increased security measures to prevent future occurrences.
