Thane Crime Branch Nabs Suspect in Gold Chain Snatching Spree

In a significant breakthrough, the Thane Crime Branch Unit-1 has apprehended a 23-year-old resident of Mumbra for his alleged involvement in a series of gold chain snatchings targeting vulnerable individuals in the Kalwa area. The arrest comes after a week-long investigation into two separate incidents that left the local community on edge.

Details of the Arrest and Recoveries

The accused, identified as Saif Firoz Khan, was taken into custody following a meticulous operation based on CCTV footage and technical surveillance. According to police reports, Khan was part of a two-member gang that executed the robberies with a consistent modus operandi. During the arrest, authorities recovered stolen property and equipment with a collective value of approximately Rs 3.4 lakh. This included two gold chains weighing 13 grams and 10.1 grams, respectively, along with the motorcycle and mobile phone allegedly used in the crimes.

Timeline of the Incidents

The first robbery occurred on January 31, 2026, when a retired assistant sub-inspector was on a late-night walk. Two individuals on a motorcycle reportedly intercepted him, forcibly snatched his gold chain, and fled the scene. A case was promptly registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Just a week later, on February 6, the duo struck again in the Ganpati Pada locality of Kalwa. This time, they targeted an elderly man during the evening hours, making off with his gold chain using the same method. Senior Inspector Sachin Gaikwad of Unit-1 confirmed the similarities between the two cases, highlighting the gang's pattern of preying on senior citizens.

Investigation and Ongoing Manhunt

Acting on leads from surveillance footage and digital inputs, police officials traced Khan to his residence at Tal Apartment on Khardi Road in Mumbra. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to the crimes and revealed the identity of his accomplice, Naushad Khan, who remains at large. Authorities have intensified efforts to locate and apprehend the absconding suspect, urging the public to report any relevant information.

This arrest underscores the Thane Crime Branch's commitment to curbing street crimes and ensuring the safety of residents, particularly the elderly. The recovery of stolen items and the confession are expected to aid in further investigations and potentially link the suspects to other unsolved cases in the region.
