Surat Man Dies by Suicide After Assault for Filming Attack; 3 Arrested
In a tragic incident in Surat, a 21-year-old man allegedly died by suicide after being assaulted for filming a video of another man being beaten in a residential society. The event occurred in the Chowk Bazar area, leading to police booking four persons for abetment to suicide and arresting three of them.
Details of the Incident
The deceased, identified as Vraj Gedia, operated an electrical shop with his father, Vinod Gedia. According to police reports, the incident took place on Valentine's Day at the Serenity Homes society, where Gedia had gone for electrical work.
At the society, a group of men were allegedly beating a man, suspecting he knew the whereabouts of a couple who had eloped on Valentine's Day. The accused—Jayanti Gondaliya (41), Dilip Pipaliya (39), Dilip Gondaliya (41), and Bhavesh Ghoghari—believed the man, a friend of the couple, had information about their location. Jayanti Gondaliya's daughter had eloped, and the accused reportedly questioned the friend about the couple's whereabouts before assaulting him.
Assault and Aftermath
While passing by, Gedia began recording the assault on his mobile phone. One of the accused allegedly noticed this, snatched his phone, and threw it on the floor, damaging it. The group then allegedly assaulted Gedia as well.
Police soon arrived at the spot and took those involved to the Chowk Bazar police station. However, both Gedia and the man who was initially beaten declined to file a complaint, after which they were allowed to leave.
Later, Gedia allegedly went to the Tapi river bridge in the Dabholi area and jumped into the river, resulting in his death.
Police Action and Arrests
After Gedia's last rites, his family approached the police and filed a complaint of abetment to suicide. Based on the complaint, police registered a case against the four accused and arrested three—Jayanti Gondaliya, Dilip Pipaliya, and Dilip Gondaliya. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities looking into the circumstances that led to the tragic suicide.
This incident highlights the severe consequences of violence and harassment in residential areas, raising concerns about public safety and mental health. The police are urging witnesses to come forward with any additional information to ensure justice is served.
