Surat Man Booked for Rape After False Marriage Promise on Social Media
Surat: Man booked for rape after false marriage promise

Police in Surat's Althan area have registered a serious case against a 29-year-old man for the alleged repeated rape of a 28-year-old woman. The complaint stems from a relationship that began on social media with a promise of marriage, which the accused later refused to fulfill.

From Online Chat to a Broken Promise

The two individuals, both married to other partners and each having a child from their respective marriages, first connected on a social media platform in September 2023. According to the complaint, the woman confided in the man about her troubled relationship with her husband.

The accused allegedly lured the victim with a promise of marriage, suggesting they both divorce their current spouses to be together. Acting on this assurance, he reportedly took her to various hotels in Althan and other locations, where the alleged rapes occurred.

A Dubious Move and a Final Betrayal

Subsequently, the accused secured a job in Dubai and moved there. The victim also traveled to Dubai on a work visa and lived there with him for a period, having left her child in a hostel in India. After about two years, both returned to India.

Back in India, the man reiterated that they should legalize their relationship. Trusting his words, the woman obtained a divorce from her husband. However, when she asked the accused to do the same, he refused to divorce his wife and marry her. The complaint further states that he threatened the woman to stop following him.

Legal Reckoning in Surat

Following the alleged betrayal and threats, the woman finally approached the Althan police station to file a formal complaint. The police have taken swift action and booked the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The charges invoked are IPC Section 376(2)(N), which pertains to rape committed repeatedly on the same woman, and IPC Section 506(2), for criminal intimidation. The case highlights the perils of online relationships built on false premises and the severe legal consequences for such alleged deceit.
