Police Nab Suspect in Sriganganagar, Uncover Illegal Arms Network with Overseas Ties
In a significant crackdown, police in Sriganganagar arrested a 24-year-old man on Sunday and confiscated a substantial cache of illegal firearms and ammunition. Officials revealed that the seized weapons are allegedly linked to gangsters operating from foreign countries, highlighting a concerning trend of cross-border criminal networks.
Details of the Arrest and Seizure
Superintendent of Police Hari Shankar identified the accused as Khushpinder Singh, a resident of Dabwali. Acting on a credible tip-off, a specialized police team intercepted Singh and recovered three illegal weapons. The haul included a modified Glock pistol of estimated 9mm bore with a magazine, another modified 9mm pistol with a magazine, and a .32 bore pistol along with two magazines. Additionally, police seized three live cartridges and three empty shells of 7.65mm calibre, underscoring the serious nature of the find.
Overseas Gangster Connections Revealed
Shankar stated that the investigation has uncovered the involvement of a Dubai-based gangster, though authorities have not yet disclosed the individual's identity. This revelation points to the expanding reach of international criminal syndicates into local regions, posing new challenges for law enforcement.
During interrogation, Khushpinder Singh disclosed that the weapons belonged to his associate, Jagmeet Singh, who has been absconding abroad along with his accomplices. He explained that Jagmeet contacted him approximately two years ago through encrypted messaging platforms such as Snapchat and Signal. Jagmeet informed him that pistols and cartridges had been concealed near a field close to a village and instructed him to retrieve and safeguard the weapons.
Communication Breakdown and Ongoing Probe
Police reported that communication between the two ceased about 15 days later, leaving Khushpinder Singh in possession of the firearms. Authorities suspect he was attempting to relocate the weapons to another location when intercepted. The accused also admitted to maintaining contact with several criminals from the Sriganganagar region who are now based overseas, further implicating a wider network.
Jagmeet Singh, named by the accused, has been evading capture for three years, adding urgency to the ongoing investigation. Police are intensifying efforts to trace his whereabouts and dismantle the broader criminal operations linked to this case.
