Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have ramped up a major anti-terror operation in the upper reaches of Kathua district, following a gunfight that left a Special Operations Group (SOG) trooper wounded. The operation, centered in the forested area of Billawar, was launched after reports of armed suspects emerged from locals.
Initial Sighting and Swift Response
The incident began around 4 pm on Wednesday when residents of Kahog village reported seeing an armed terrorist in the forests of the Dhanu Parole-Kamadh Nallah area. Acting swiftly, a joint team comprising the Indian Army, CRPF, and J&K Police's SOG cordoned off the zone and initiated a search to neutralize the fleeing ultras, suspected to be two or three in number.
Firefight in Treacherous Terrain
The holed-up terrorists opened fire on the search party, triggering an encounter that lasted for about one-and-a-half hours. Security personnel faced significant challenges, navigating through treacherous terrain, thick vegetation, and inclement weather. Additional forces and aerial surveillance were deployed to assist. However, the operation had to be temporarily suspended as darkness fell, though the cordon remained intact throughout the night.
Renewed Contact and Trooper Injury
The search resumed early on Thursday with renewed vigor. Forces soon re-established contact with the terrorists, leading to another exchange of fire. During this skirmish, an SOG jawan sustained a bullet injury in his leg. The trooper was immediately evacuated and hospitalized with what officials described as minor injuries. The operation continues as security forces work to flush out the hidden terrorists from the dense forest area.
