Silchar Gang-Rape: Woman Assaulted in Front of Fiancé, One Arrested
In a shocking incident in Silchar, Assam, a 28-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by a group of youths in front of her fiancé on the Ramnagar bypass road. Police confirmed on Tuesday that one person has been arrested in connection with the case, with investigations ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.

According to the survivor's statement, the traumatic event unfolded on the night of February 19. The couple was traveling in a car along the Silchar bypass when they stopped near the Chengkoorie Road area after the fiancé briefly exited the vehicle. At this point, a group of youths arrived in another vehicle, blocked their path, and forcibly dragged the fiancé a short distance away, restraining him. The woman alleged that the assailants then sexually assaulted her one after another, with no bystanders present to intervene or assist during the ordeal.
Police Response and Legal Action
Based on the survivor's complaint, Silchar Sadar police have registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The charges include provisions related to gangrape, criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, assault on a woman, and dacoity. Cachar SP Partha Pratim Das stated that one accused has been taken into custody, and efforts are intensifying to arrest the remaining culprits. He added, "The survivor's medical examination has been conducted, and the report is awaited. Investigation is progressing on multiple fronts."
Extortion Angle Under Probe
In addition to the primary charges, police revealed that the woman also alleged the accused extorted Rs 10,000 from the couple during the incident. Investigators are actively probing this extortion angle alongside the sexual assault case, highlighting the multifaceted nature of the crime. The authorities are working to gather evidence and ensure a thorough investigation to bring all perpetrators to justice.
