Kannur Police Intensify Investigation into BDS Student's Death with Additional Charges
In a significant development in the tragic case of Nithin Raj R L, a 23-year-old first-year BDS student at Kannur Dental College, the Kannur police have escalated their legal approach. Police Commissioner Nidhinraj P has officially announced that stringent provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, along with charges for abetment to suicide, have now been incorporated into the ongoing investigation. This move underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the circumstances surrounding the young student's untimely death.
Comprehensive Investigation and Forensic Findings
The police commissioner detailed that the inquest and postmortem procedures have been completed, with medical reports indicating that the injuries sustained were consistent with those from a fall. Based on preliminary evidence, police maintain that this appears to be a case of suicide. However, the investigation is far from over. Commissioner Nidhinraj emphasized that all individuals against whom allegations have been raised will be formally included in the list of accused, ensuring a thorough examination of every potential factor.
Focus on Student Welfare and Ragging Allegations
In an effort to gather comprehensive testimony, the police are adopting a sensitive approach towards the student community. All students will be engaged confidentially, with statements recorded from those willing to cooperate. The commissioner explicitly stated that allegations of ragging—a persistent issue in educational institutions—are being taken with utmost seriousness and will be rigorously investigated as part of the broader case.
Digital Evidence and Loan App Harassment Uncovered
Simultaneously, investigators are meticulously verifying chat histories and call records to piece together the student's final days. A particularly alarming discovery emerged during the probe: a separate but connected FIR has been registered at the cyber police station concerning harassment from a loan application. It was revealed that the victim had taken a loan in December-January, and during this process, loan app agents accessed the contact number of a teacher from the same college.
When the student defaulted on payments, the teacher also began receiving persistent calls from the loan agency. Notably, on April 10, the teacher was subjected to continuous harassment from these agents. Preliminary investigations suggest that this external pressure could have significantly contributed to the mental distress experienced by the student, potentially exacerbating his situation.
Review of Previous Complaints
Adding another layer to the investigation, police are also examining a separate complaint filed against the victim in November of last year. While initial assessments indicate that this complaint may not be directly linked to the death, authorities are leaving no stone unturned and are thoroughly reviewing all available information to ensure a complete understanding of the case.
The Kannur police's multi-faceted approach, combining legal charges, digital forensics, and community engagement, highlights their commitment to uncovering the full truth behind this tragic incident and ensuring justice for the deceased student.
