The Supreme Court on Monday sought a status report on the trial proceedings against Kannada actor Darshan and other accused in the Renukaswamy murder case. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan directed the trial court to submit the report within two weeks.
Denial of Basic Amenities Alleged
During the hearing, the counsel for Darshan submitted that despite the apex court's earlier direction that the actor should not receive special treatment in jail, he has been denied basic amenities that are otherwise provided to undertrial prisoners. The counsel argued that this has caused undue hardship to the actor.
Court's Previous Observations
The Supreme Court had earlier observed that Darshan should not be accorded a five-star treatment while in custody. However, the counsel contended that the jail authorities have misinterpreted the order, leading to denial of essential facilities.
- The bench asked the trial court to detail the facilities being provided to Darshan.
- It also sought information on the progress of the trial and the number of witnesses examined so far.
- The case is listed for further hearing after four weeks.
The Renukaswamy murder case involves the alleged killing of a fan who had sent obscene messages to Darshan's partner. The actor and several others were arrested in 2024 and are currently facing trial.
