In a significant breakthrough, the Oshiwara police in Mumbai have apprehended a notorious criminal linked to a high-value burglary at the residence of a Bollywood personality. The accused, identified as a 40-year-old history-sheeter, stands charged with stealing jewellery valued at nearly Rs 1.4 crore from actor Abhimanyu Singh's bungalow.
The Midnight Burglary in Versova
The incident occurred in the early hours of December 30. According to police officials, the accused allegedly entered the multi-storey bungalow located in the upscale Oshiwara-Versova belt via the terrace around 2 am. At the time, the actor's elderly mother, his in-laws, and domestic help were asleep on different floors of the property. The brazen theft went unnoticed until the following morning when the family discovered the jewellery missing.
Technical Investigation Leads to Arrest
The investigation, supervised by DCP Dikshit Gedam, faced an initial challenge as the CCTV camera at the bungalow lacked night vision, resulting in dark footage. However, a dedicated team comprising senior inspector Sanjay Chavan, inspector Sachin Patil, assistant inspector Vikas Kadam, and other staff employed technical analysis to enhance the visuals. This led to the identification of the suspect.
"We used technical assistance to track down the accused to Virar," stated a police officer. The team traced the man, identified as Moj Rathod, to a densely populated chawl in Virar (East). Following his arrest, the police successfully recovered stolen jewellery worth approximately Rs 1.3 crore. Rathod is known to have targeted bungalows in the Oshiwara-Versova area.
Recovery and Ongoing Probe
The swift action by the Oshiwara police led to the recovery of a majority of the stolen booty. Abhimanyu Singh, known for his work in films and television, is also recognized as the brother of actor Chandrachur Singh. The police are continuing their investigation to ascertain if the accused is involved in other similar crimes in the city. This arrest highlights the use of technical surveillance in solving complex cases even with limited initial evidence.
