Major Drug Bust in Assam's Cachar District
In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, police in Cachar district of Assam have seized suspected heroin valued at approximately Rs 1.10 crore and arrested one individual. The operation, which unfolded on Thursday evening, marks a crucial step in combating drug-related crimes in the region.
Targeted Operation Based on Intelligence
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a specialized police team launched a covert operation in an area under the jurisdiction of Lakhipur police station. Cachar additional superintendent of police (crime) Rajat Kumar Pal confirmed that the operation was meticulously planned to intercept suspected drug carriers.
During the surveillance, officers intercepted a man who was carrying a backpack and appeared suspicious. The individual was immediately detained for questioning as part of standard police protocol.
Substantial Narcotics Recovery
Upon searching the detained suspect's backpack, police made a startling discovery. Inside, they found 15 soap cases containing a total of 218 grams of a substance suspected to be heroin. The narcotics, carefully concealed within the everyday items, were immediately seized as evidence.
In addition to the drug haul, investigators recovered a cell phone from the accused. The device is now being examined for potential leads and connections to broader drug networks operating in the area.
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The accused has been formally arrested and is currently in police custody. Authorities have registered a case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which carries severe penalties for drug trafficking offenses.
Police officials have emphasized that the investigation remains active and expanding. Forensic analysis of the seized substance is underway to confirm its composition and purity, which will help determine the exact street value of the confiscated drugs.
