RPF Confiscates 201 Used Mobile Phones in Major Train Raid at Mangaluru Junction

In a significant crackdown on illegal transportation activities, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Southern Railway's Palakkad Division has seized 201 used mobile phones with an estimated value of approximately Rs 10 lakh. This operation was part of a special enforcement drive targeting the unlawful movement of cash, gold, and other valuables through the railway network, particularly in light of heightened security measures for the upcoming 2026 Kerala assembly elections.

Early Morning Inspection Leads to Major Discovery

The seizure occurred during a routine check conducted around 3 am on Monday at Platform No. 3 of Mangaluru Junction Railway Station. RPF personnel, including head constable Sujeesh and constable Ramakrishna, were inspecting the general coach of Train No. 19578, the Jamnagar-Tirunelveli Junction Express, when they noticed three unattended bags placed on the upper luggage rack. Acting on suspicion, the officers examined the bags and discovered the cache of 201 used mobile phones, which included devices from various brands.

Investigation Intensifies with Suspect Identification Efforts

Further investigation involved reviewing body-worn camera footage from the on-duty staff, which revealed the presence of two suspected individuals in the coach around the time the bags were detected. Authorities are now coordinating with the Crime Intelligence Branch and the divisional Crime Prevention and Detection Squad to identify and trace these suspects. The case has also been shared with the Government Railway Police for a comprehensive investigation and to initiate appropriate legal proceedings regarding the seized items.

Enhanced Surveillance for Election Security

Railway officials have emphasized that this special drive is part of intensified surveillance efforts to ensure the safety and integrity of the railway network during the election period. They have announced that monitoring and enforcement operations will continue across railway stations and trains to prevent the illegal transportation of valuables and other prohibited items. This proactive approach aims to safeguard public security and maintain order as Kerala prepares for its 2026 assembly elections.
