RPF's Swift Action Recovers Rs 7.5 Lakh Gold from Train in Bengaluru
In a heartening display of efficiency, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Bengaluru successfully traced and returned a bag containing valuable gold ornaments worth approximately Rs 7.5 lakh to a senior couple who had accidentally left it behind on a train. The incident unfolded early Tuesday morning when the couple, traveling from Pune to Bengaluru, disembarked from the Udyan Express at Yelahanka station.
Immediate Complaint Leads to Rapid Response
The couple, identified as Manjunath and Sunitha (names changed for privacy), realized the purse was missing only after reaching their residence in Bengaluru. Sunitha, 58, discovered the loss, prompting their son to immediately file a complaint through the Rail Madad system at 4:50 AM. The complaint specified that a handbag had been left in Coach B1 of Train 11301, the Udyan Express.
Acting with remarkable promptness, the RPF control room alerted on-duty personnel, including Head Constable N Sukumar, who was performing escort duties aboard the moving train. This quick communication set the recovery process in motion, demonstrating the effectiveness of the Rail Madad platform in emergencies.
Recovery Amidst Moving Train
Head Constable Sukumar received instructions while inspecting a sleeper compartment, by which time the train had already passed KR Puram. He rushed to the third AC coach and located the unattended bag on a lower berth. "I reached the coach, and the bag was left behind on the lower berth when I arrived. It's not the first time such incidents have occurred. Passengers should report immediately, as was done in this case," Sukumar remarked, highlighting the importance of timely reporting.
By approximately 5:15 AM, the bag was secured. It was later handed over to an RPF constable at Bengaluru Cantonment station upon the train's arrival, ensuring the items remained safe throughout the process.
Valuables Recovered Intact
After due verification, the bag was returned to the complainant later in the day. RPF officials confirmed that the contents included gold ornaments weighing about 50 grams, valued at Rs 7.5 lakh, along with Rs 3,500 in cash—all recovered completely intact. The recovery not only prevented a significant financial loss for the senior couple but also underscored the RPF's commitment to passenger safety and property security.
The complainant praised the swift response from authorities, attributing the successful recovery to the efficiency of the Rail Madad system. This incident serves as a reminder for travelers to remain vigilant with their belongings and to utilize available reporting mechanisms promptly in case of loss or theft.
