Ranchi District Records Increase in Road Accidents and Fatalities in 2025

Official figures from the transport department reveal that Ranchi district experienced a significant rise in road accidents, fatalities, and injuries in 2025 compared to the previous year. The data indicates a concerning trend in road safety, with fatalities continuing to outnumber injuries, although the disparity between the two has decreased.

Comparative Analysis of Accident Statistics

In 2025, Ranchi district reported 825 road accidents, marking an increase of 79 incidents from the 746 recorded in 2024. The number of fatalities rose to 557 in 2025, up by only seven from the 550 deaths in 2024. Meanwhile, injuries surged to 539 in 2025, compared to 465 in 2024. This resulted in a gap of 18 more deaths than injuries in 2025, a notable reduction from the 85-death gap observed in 2024.

National Context and State Rankings

The National Crime Record Bureau's 2024 report highlighted that Jharkhand was among the five states and Union territories where road accident deaths exceeded injuries in 2023. Other regions with similar trends included Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Punjab, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. This underscores a broader national issue in road safety management.

Government Initiatives to Enhance Road Safety

District Transport Officer Akhilesh Kumar emphasized that multiple departments have implemented measures to curb accidents and fatalities. Corrective actions such as installing road rumblers at black spots, including the Chhutupalu valley, aim to slow down vehicles and prevent collisions. Additionally, road widening projects have been undertaken to improve traffic flow and reduce accident risks.

The state government is actively promoting the Good Samaritan policy, which incentivizes individuals who assist in transporting road accident victims to hospitals promptly. Furthermore, the deployment of road safety mitras is being expanded to provide guidance and support to travelers, enhancing overall road safety awareness.

Ongoing Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite these efforts, the increase in accidents and fatalities points to persistent challenges in road infrastructure and driver behavior. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with plans to introduce more advanced safety technologies and community engagement programs. The focus remains on reducing the toll of road accidents through comprehensive strategies and public cooperation.
