Ranchi Police Launch Intensive Crackdown on Drunk and Rash Driving

In response to a series of fatal road accidents that have shaken the state capital this week, senior police officials in Ranchi took decisive action on Thursday night. They conducted an intensive drive targeting rash and drunk driving, while simultaneously reviewing the ground-level preparedness of the police force to curb such incidents.

Police Operation Targets Traffic Violations

The operation, led under the supervision of SSP (Ranchi) Rakesh Ranjan, saw active participation from city, rural, and traffic Superintendents of Police (SPs). The team visited multiple prominent locations across Ranchi, focusing on accident-prone stretches and busy arterial roads. Vehicles were stopped, and drivers were thoroughly checked for alcohol consumption, overspeeding, and other traffic violations.

According to SP (traffic) Rakesh Singh, a total of six individuals were fined for drunk driving, and one person faced penalties for using modified silencers on his motorcycle. The crackdown covered key areas such as Main Road, Kantatoli, Lalpur Chowk, Doranda, Kanke Road, and Argora Chowk.

Beyond Fines: Assessing Police Preparedness

SP Rakesh Singh emphasized that while violators were fined and action was initiated against them, the primary goal of the exercise extended beyond imposing penalties. The drive aimed to assess and strengthen the preparedness of the police to prevent future accidents. Multiple locations, especially areas near bars where people often consume alcohol before engaging in rash driving, were identified for intensified checking to deter motorists from drunk and reckless behavior.

Proactive Measures and Public Response

Earlier on Thursday, SSP Rakesh Ranjan convened a meeting directing the police force to take stringent action against ongoing rash driving and stunts in the district. He also instructed officers to monitor overspeeding vehicles during night hours closely and install sliders and barricades at prominent locations to curb the menace.

Following these directives, police promptly installed barricades and sliders at several critical spots, including Lalpur–Kokar Road, Kanke Road, and Main Road. This initiative is designed to create a safer and more secure environment for both motorists and pedestrians.

A local motorist, Sanjay Prakash, commented on the measures, stating, "Installation of barricades was a much-needed initiative at the Distillery Pool on the Lalpur-Kokar Road, where a collision between a four-wheeler and an e-rickshaw occurred on Thursday. However, the police only installed it after the fatal accident. Nevertheless, it is better late than never."

This comprehensive police effort underscores a renewed commitment to enhancing road safety in Ranchi, addressing both immediate violations and long-term preventive strategies to reduce traffic-related fatalities.
