Evening Walk in Rajkot Turns into Horrific Assault at Popular Race Course
A routine evening stroll at Rajkot's historic Race Course area transformed into a terrifying ordeal for a local couple when the 33-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted and molested by a stranger. This disturbing incident has ignited urgent conversations about women's security in one of the city's oldest and most cherished public spaces, situated prominently in the urban center.
Assault Occurs Amid Bustling Evening Crowds
Shockingly, the attack unfolded around 10:15 PM, a time when Race Course and its environs are typically vibrant with activity. Families enjoy the garden, individuals take leisurely walks, and visitors savor treats from numerous roadside food vendors and restaurants. The victim and her husband were walking in the Love Garden section, with the husband positioned a few steps ahead.
The assailant, identified as Vijay Kuvariya from the Raiyadhar area, allegedly approached the woman from behind without warning. He grabbed her neck, covered her mouth to stifle any screams, and engaged in inappropriate physical contact. Subsequently, he pushed her to the ground, resulting in bodily injuries.
Husband Unaware Initially; Suspect Flees Scene
Police reports indicate the husband was unaware of the assault initially, as the woman was gagged and he had progressed further along the path. When the victim managed to raise an alarm, Kuvariya reportedly jumped over the garden grille and escaped into the night. The couple initially hesitated to report the incident to authorities, fearing potential social stigma and repercussions.
Second Encounter Leads to Arrest and Formal Complaint
The following day, the victim's husband reportedly spotted the suspect again in the same garden area and confronted him directly. He then immediately dialed the 112 emergency helpline, prompting police to arrive swiftly at the location. Officers apprehended Kuvariya and escorted both him and the couple to the police station, where the woman formally registered a complaint.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Kuvariya had no prior acquaintance with the victim. He is employed at a roadside stall selling bhajiyas, adding a layer of concern about random attacks in public spaces.
Legal Charges Filed Against the Accused
Authorities have registered a case against Vijay Kuvariya under specific sections of the law:
- Section 75(1)(i): Pertaining to sexual harassment, including making sexually coloured remarks, unwelcome physical contact, or other inappropriate sexual conduct toward a woman.
- Section 115(2): Addressing voluntarily causing hurt to another individual.
This incident underscores the pressing need for enhanced security measures and public awareness in recreational areas, even during peak hours when crowds are present.
