Labour bodies across Punjab have raised strong objections against the inclusion of a casteist term in the online form for Census 2026. The unions have demanded that the term be removed immediately and replaced with a more respectful and accurate descriptor.
Nature of the Controversy
The controversial term, which has historical connotations of discrimination, appears in the dropdown menu for caste categories. Activists argue that its use perpetuates social stigma and violates constitutional principles of equality. The protest, led by major labour federations, has garnered support from various civil society groups.
Demands of the Labour Bodies
- Immediate deletion of the casteist term from the census form.
- Apology from the authorities responsible for designing the form.
- Formation of a committee to review and update caste nomenclature in official documents.
In a joint statement, the labour unions said: “Such terms have no place in a modern, progressive India. The census must reflect our commitment to social justice and dignity for all.”
Government Response
Officials from the Census Department have acknowledged the complaint and assured that the matter will be examined. A spokesperson stated: “We take these concerns seriously and will consult with experts to ensure the final form is free of any offensive language.”
The protest highlights ongoing struggles against caste-based discrimination in official records. Labour bodies have warned of intensified agitation if their demands are not met before the census enumeration begins.
