Major Jewellery Heist in Pune: Thieves Loot Rs 98.5 Lakh in Gold and Silver
In a brazen overnight robbery, unidentified thieves made off with gold and silver jewellery valued at a staggering Rs 98.5 lakh from a jewellery store located in the Magarpatta area of Hadapsar, Pune. The theft occurred between 1:20 AM and 2:45 AM on Monday, leaving the store owner and local authorities scrambling for answers.
Discovery and Police Complaint
The incident came to light around 11 AM on Monday when store owner Sandip Talegaonkar (58) and his employees arrived to open the shop for the day. Shocked to find the premises ransacked, Talegaonkar immediately lodged a formal complaint with the Hadapsar police, initiating an investigation into the high-value theft.
CCTV Footage Reveals Details
Senior Inspector Sanjay Mogale of the Hadapsar police provided crucial insights based on preliminary examinations of CCTV footage. The surveillance video shows three to four men breaking open the front shutter locks and entering the store. Once inside, they systematically packed gold and silver jewellery into bags before fleeing the scene on foot. Police suspect that the perpetrators had a vehicle parked at a distance to facilitate their escape.
"The shop is under CCTV camera surveillance. A preliminary examination of the footage shows that three to four men broke open the front shutter locks and entered the premises. They packed the gold and silver jewellery into bags and fled on foot. We suspect their vehicle was parked at a distance," Mogale stated.
Nature of the Stolen Items
According to police reports, the thieves primarily targeted silver jewellery and artefacts, although they also took a couple of gold chains. This mix of items suggests a calculated theft aimed at maximizing value while minimizing detection risks. Inspector Mogale noted that while the Magarpatta area is typically crowded during the day, it remains largely deserted at night, providing an opportune window for the criminals to operate undetected.
Police Investigation Underway
In response to the robbery, the Hadapsar police have formed a dedicated team to track the movement of the suspects. A parallel investigation is being conducted by the crime branch to expedite the case and recover the stolen valuables. Authorities are analyzing the CCTV footage in detail and gathering forensic evidence to identify the culprits and understand their modus operandi.
This incident has raised concerns about security in commercial areas during off-hours, prompting calls for enhanced surveillance and patrols. The police are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to solve this significant theft and bring the perpetrators to justice.
