Pune Ganj Peth Violence: Six Arrested After Attempted Shooting in Gang Dispute
An old dispute between two groups in Pune's Ganj Peth area escalated into a violent confrontation in the early hours of Wednesday, resulting in head injuries to a 22-year-old victim and the arrest of six individuals. The incident, which involved an attempted shooting, has prompted a swift police response under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Violent Escalation in Ganj Peth
According to police reports, the victim and his friends were putting up banners for an upcoming program in their area when they engaged in heated arguments with members of an opposing group over a trivial issue. The situation quickly deteriorated when the opposing members left the scene and returned with six accomplices, leading to a physical altercation.
The main accused attempted to shoot the victim twice, but the firearm failed to discharge. In a subsequent assault, the accused used the grip of the weapon to inflict head injuries on the victim, while his accomplices attacked three others with belts. Before fleeing, the group hurled bottles and stones, leaving the victims injured and the scene in disarray.
Police Investigation and Arrests
The Khadak police, led by senior police inspector Shashikant Chavan, have registered a case under sections 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 189, 190, and 191 (rioting) of the BNS. Six accused have been arrested in connection with the violence, but the primary suspect, who attempted the shooting, remains at large. An officer from the Khadak police stated that this individual is a known criminal on police records, and teams have been deployed to apprehend him.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the magazine of the firearm fell at the scene during the melee. The accused later returned to retrieve it before driving away, adding a layer of premeditation to the incident. The victim has lodged a formal complaint, and authorities are intensifying efforts to ensure all involved are brought to justice.
Broader Implications and Community Impact
This incident highlights ongoing tensions in Ganj Peth, with long-standing disputes between groups posing a threat to public safety. The use of a firearm, even if it malfunctioned, underscores the severity of the conflict and the potential for more dangerous outcomes in future altercations.
Local residents have expressed concern over the violence, calling for increased police patrols and community interventions to prevent such incidents. The police have assured the public that they are taking all necessary measures to maintain order and prevent further escalation.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in locating the fugitive accused. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing underlying disputes before they erupt into violence, with the BNS providing a legal framework for holding perpetrators accountable.
