A tragic road accident on the Kalyan-Nagar highway near Pune resulted in the deaths of two women and left at least 25 others injured on Tuesday morning. The collision involved a pickup truck carrying farm workers and a milk tanker.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The incident occurred around 8:30 am at Dumbarwadi village near Alephata, approximately 95 kilometers from Pune city. According to the Pune Rural Police, the pickup truck, which was ferrying workers towards Alephata, collided head-on with the tanker coming from the opposite direction. The tanker was reportedly heading towards Malshej Ghat.
The impact of the crash was severe. Vandana Ganesh Hillam (20) and Manda Shivram Hillam (35), both residents of Murbad taluka in Thane district, were killed on the spot. The drivers of both vehicles were among those who sustained injuries.
Rescue and Aftermath
Prompt action by residents from nearby areas helped in shifting the injured victims to medical facilities. The injured were initially treated at the primary health centre in Otur and several private hospitals.
"Residents of nearby areas shifted the injured victims to hospitals. Two suffered severe injuries and are in hospital. The others were released after treatment," stated an officer from the Otur Police.
Most of the workers in the pickup truck were from villages on the border of Thane and Pune districts within Murbad taluka. They had been picked up from the Bankarphata area in Junnar taluka for their daily work.
Traffic Disruption and Police Action
The accident caused significant traffic congestion on the busy Kalyan-Nagar Road. Normal traffic flow resumed only after police officials cleared the wreckage and moved the vehicles to the roadside.
The Otur Police have registered a case of accidental death in connection with the incident. Investigations into the exact cause of the collision are ongoing.
