Property Dispute Turns Deadly in Karnataka: Brother Murders Sibling, Stages Accident
In a shocking case of familial violence, a 24-year-old man in Karnataka's Vijayanagara district allegedly murdered his elder brother with the assistance of a friend over a property dispute, attempting to disguise the crime as a tragic motorcycle accident. The incident, which has sent ripples through the local community, unfolded under the jurisdiction of the Arasikere police station in Harapanahalli taluk.
Discovery of the Crime and Arrests
The grim discovery came to light on Saturday night when police responded to a complaint. The deceased has been identified as Marulasiddesh, a 26-year-old resident of Hagarishiranahalli village. Authorities swiftly arrested his younger brother, Patrigouda, aged 24, and his friend, Uttangi Narappa, 29, from Kadabagere village, in connection with the heinous act.
Senior police officials, including Vijayanagara Superintendent of Police S Jahnavi, Deputy SP Santosh Chavan, and Circle Police Inspector Mahantesh Sajjan, visited the murder spot in Hosapete on Saturday night to conduct a thorough inspection of the scene, underscoring the seriousness of the investigation.
Family Dynamics and the Dispute
The case was initiated following a complaint filed by Shantamma, the mother of the deceased, who works as an anganwadi worker. She provided crucial details to the police, revealing a history of familial tension. According to her statement, Marulasiddesh managed the household responsibilities, farmland, and tractor, while Patrigouda frequently quarreled with the family, persistently demanding a share in the property.
On the afternoon of March 13, Patrigouda reportedly escalated the conflict by picking a fresh argument over the property issue. He allegedly threatened to leave for Bengaluru to seek work if his demands were not met, before storming out of the house. This confrontation set the stage for the tragic events that followed.
Unraveling the Staged Accident
Later that day, Marulasiddesh left home on his motorcycle along with Uttangi Narappa, ostensibly to search for Patrigouda. Around 1 a.m., a distant relative named Jayappa informed Shantamma that Marulasiddesh had died in a motorcycle accident near Hosahalli Cross, close to Hiremegalagere.
However, when Shantamma arrived at the Arasikere government hospital, her maternal instincts and keen observation raised immediate suspicions. She noticed unusual injuries on Marulasiddesh's body that did not align with a typical accident. Moreover, she observed that both Patrigouda and Narappa, who were reportedly traveling on the same motorcycle, had not sustained any injuries whatsoever.
Driven by her suspicions of foul play, Shantamma courageously lodged a formal police complaint, which prompted a swift investigation.
Police Investigation and Breakthrough
A dedicated team led by Arasikere police station Police Sub-Inspector Vijayakrishna took charge of the case. Through meticulous investigation, they uncovered evidence pointing to murder rather than an accident. The police determined that Patrigouda, with Narappa's help, had allegedly killed Marulasiddesh and then attempted to stage the scene to look like a motorcycle mishap to evade detection.
The arrests were made based on this evidence, highlighting the effectiveness of the police response. The case serves as a grim reminder of how property disputes can escalate into violent crimes within families, often with devastating consequences.
