Senior Police Officers Recognized for RG Kar Case Investigation on Republic Day
Two distinguished senior police officers, one from the state cadre and another from the central cadre, who played pivotal roles in supervising the high-profile RG Kar rape-murder investigation last year, are set to be honored by the Union government on the occasion of Republic Day. Their exemplary dedication and meticulous work in handling this sensitive case have earned them national recognition.
Commissioner Murlidhar Sharma to Receive Meritorious Service Medal
Murlidhar Sharma, the present Barrackpore Police commissioner, will be awarded the prestigious Meritorious Service Medal. During the critical phase of the RG Kar case, Sharma served as the detective department chief of Kolkata Police, where his leadership was instrumental in the swift arrest of the prime suspect, Sanjay Roy, just one day after the incident occurred.
A 2005-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Sharma has an impressive track record of managing multiple high-profile cases across both Kolkata and Barrackpore. His strategic approach and commitment to justice have consistently set a high standard in law enforcement, making this award a well-deserved acknowledgment of his contributions.
Joint Director V Chandrasekhar Honored with President's Medal
The other officer to be recognized is V Chandrasekhar, a key member of the RG Kar probe team representing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). As the CBI joint director who supervised this significant murder investigation, Chandrasekhar is among thirty-one officers from the central agency who will receive police medals on the 77th Republic Day.
A 2000-batch IPS officer from the Gujarat cadre, Chandrasekhar will be conferred with the President's Medal for Distinguished Service, as per the official list released on Sunday. His effective supervision ensured a rapid charge sheet was filed, leading to the conviction of the main accused within a remarkably short timeframe, showcasing his efficiency and dedication to upholding the law.
Additional Awards for Bengal Police Personnel
In addition to these two officers, several other police personnel from Bengal will also be honored for their outstanding service. DC Debabrata Sarkar and deputy SP Ram Kumar Mondal are set to receive the President's Medal, highlighting their commendable efforts in various capacities.
Overall, Bengal will receive a total of twenty-two medals, reflecting the state's strong commitment to law enforcement and public safety. Among the notable recipients is DIG Murshidabad range Syed Waqar Raza, who led a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the probe into the Samserganj riots last year. Under his guidance, the SIT ensured that eleven individuals involved in the murder of a father-son duo were sentenced to death by a local court in a swift and efficient manner.
