Pilibhit: Three Individuals Charged in Alleged Sister-in-Law Molestation Case

In a disturbing incident from Pilibhit district, three persons have been formally charged in connection with the alleged stripping and molestation of a woman by her brother-in-law. The case, registered under the Neuria police station, comes more than two weeks after the purported assault, highlighting significant delays in police action.

Delayed Justice After Police Inaction

According to police reports, the case was officially registered on Monday following the direct intervention of Superintendent of Police Sukirti Madhav. This action was initiated only after the 30-year-old victim personally approached the SP with her complaint, underscoring a failure in the initial response from local authorities.

The woman had previously submitted a written complaint at the local police station on the very day of the incident, February 23. However, the police initially declined to file a First Information Report (FIR), forcing the victim to escalate the matter to higher officials to seek justice.

Details of the Alleged Assault

The victim recounted that the incident occurred when she visited her elder sister's house in a nearby village. She had received a phone call from her sister informing her that she was being beaten by her husband. Upon arriving at the house with her own husband, the victim found her sister had stepped out to fetch drinking water from a handpump.

While her husband waited outside, the victim remained inside the house. It was at this moment that her sister's husband returned home. He allegedly subjected her to verbal abuse, questioning her for attempting to protect her sister. The situation quickly escalated as he reportedly grabbed her, knocked her to the ground, tore her clothes, and molested her.

Hearing her screams, her husband rushed inside and managed to rescue her from the assault. This immediate intervention prevented further harm, but the traumatic experience had already occurred.

Legal Charges and Ongoing Investigation

Station House Officer Subhash Mawi confirmed that the primary accused, along with his parents, has been booked under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges include:

  • Section 115(2): Voluntarily causing hurt
  • Section 74: Using criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty
  • Section 76: Using criminal force to a woman with intent to disrobe her

Despite these serious charges, the accused individuals have not yet been arrested, and the investigation remains ongoing. The police are actively pursuing the case to ensure that justice is served, though the delay in initial registration raises concerns about procedural lapses.

Broader Implications and Community Response

This case has drawn attention to issues of police responsiveness and victim support in rural areas. The victim's perseverance in approaching the Superintendent of Police after being turned away locally highlights the challenges many face in accessing timely legal recourse.

Authorities have assured that they are taking the matter seriously and are committed to a thorough investigation. The community awaits further developments as the legal process unfolds, hoping for accountability and measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
