Congress MLA Pargat Singh Slams AAP for Twisting Khaira's Assembly Remarks

Senior Congress leader and Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh on Tuesday strongly criticised what he termed the "deliberate misinterpretation" of statements made by Sukhpal Singh Khaira in the Punjab legislative assembly. Pargat accused the current Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) administration of distorting words to fit a political narrative while overlooking questionable conduct within its own ranks.

Defence of Khaira and Allegations of Double Standards

Pargat Singh defended Khaira, asserting that the MLA did not target any specific community and that his remarks were being taken out of context. He highlighted a "glaring double standard" regarding respect for women in political discourse, pointing to past comments by the chief minister.

"The chief minister previously made public remarks about two wives and even joked about a third, during a college visit. If we are talking about the dignity and respect of women, why are those personal stories not being held to the same standard?" Pargat questioned, emphasising the inconsistency in accountability.

Call for Fairness and Focus on Facts

The Congress leader stressed that every individual, regardless of allegations, has the right to present their side of the story in legal proceedings. He accused the government of bypassing this basic principle of fairness by "misinterpreting" Khaira's speech to divert attention from more pressing issues.

"The media and the public can clearly see how these statements are being manipulated," Pargat said. "It is essential that we focus on facts rather than creating controversies out of thin air." He urged for a balanced and fair approach to legislative discourse, warning against silencing political opposition through deliberate misinformation.

Pargat Singh concluded by advocating for transparency and integrity in political debates, underscoring the need to uphold democratic values in the Punjab assembly.
