Patna: 668 Convictions in 428 Cases Last Month

In a significant achievement for law enforcement in Bihar's capital, Patna police have secured convictions for 668 accused persons across 428 different cases during the month of October this year. This massive judicial success was announced by officials on Saturday, highlighting a coordinated effort between police, judiciary, and prosecution departments.

Strategic Approach to Crime Control

Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikeya K Sharma emphasized that punishment through proper judicial process creates greater fear among criminals than any other measure. The courts conducted thorough examinations of all evidence and delivered swift justice in various serious cases including murder, Arms Act violations, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act cases, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act violations, and other grave crimes.

SSP Sharma explained the rigorous process behind these convictions: Strict monitoring of investigations, rapid arrests, scientific evidence collection, and quality charge-sheets ensured maximum convictions were achieved in minimum time. This systematic approach has proven highly effective in strengthening the judicial process against criminals.

Notable Cases and Sentences

Among the significant sentences delivered last month was the case of Abhay Kumar from Maner, who received 20 years of rigorous imprisonment under the Pocso Act for sexually assaulting a minor. The court also imposed additional concurrent prison terms and financial penalties in this case.

In another important verdict, Ranjan Kumar was sentenced to concurrent three-year terms under various sections of the Pocso Act and Indian Penal Code. The court also directed that the victim receive Rs 20,000 compensation for the trauma suffered.

Drug and Arms Offenses Addressed

The conviction drive also targeted drug-related crimes and illegal arms possession. In NDPS cases, Tiku Mahato and Vittu Kumar were convicted for possession of commercial quantities of cannabis. Meanwhile, in Barh area, three accused received three-year sentences each under the Arms Act for illegal possession of firearms.

SSP Sharma stressed that such speedy and severe punishments serve dual purposes - they deliver justice to victims while simultaneously acting as a strong deterrent to potential criminals. He acknowledged the round-the-clock efforts of police officers, public prosecutors, and custodian units in presenting solid cases before the courts.

The October conviction statistics represent one of the most successful months for Patna police in recent times, demonstrating how coordinated efforts between law enforcement and judiciary can effectively combat crime in urban areas.
