Panjab University Shooting: Key Suspect Apprehended in Coordinated Police Action
In a significant breakthrough, the primary suspect in the Panjab University firing incident has been arrested following a meticulously planned joint operation. Chandigarh Police, in collaboration with Punjab's Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) and Fatehgarh Sahib Police, successfully captured the accused after a brief but intense exchange of gunfire in Fatehgarh Sahib.
Details of the Arrest and Operation
The arrest unfolded when law enforcement agencies traced the location of the accused to village Nurpur in Amloh, Fatehgarh Sahib. As police teams moved in to apprehend him, the suspect opened fire on the officers, prompting a retaliatory response. During this confrontation, the accused sustained injuries and was promptly transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
Authorities have identified the arrested individual as Jaspreet Singh, alias Jass Panaich, a resident of Village Kheri Noudh Singh in Khamano, Fatehgarh Sahib. From his possession, police recovered critical evidence, including:
- One .32 bore pistol
- Two live cartridges
- Four empty cartridges
- A Creta car with registration number PB23Z0717

Punjab Police DGP Gaurav Yadav revealed that Jaspreet Singh is a key member of the Doni Bal/Bambiha criminal group. Preliminary investigations indicate that the attack at Panjab University was orchestrated at the behest of this notorious gang. DGP Yadav emphasized that further investigations are actively underway to uncover additional details and potential accomplices.
AGTF ADGP Promod Ban provided insights into the operational efforts, stating that a dedicated team had been tracking leads across Chandigarh, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Amloh since the day of the incident. The suspect was intercepted on the Amloh–Patran road, where he initiated the firefight with police personnel.
Recap of the Panjab University Incident
The arrest stems from a shocking event that occurred on March 17, when two men entered the parking lot near Panjab University's botany department. As student leader Jashandeep Singh Jawanda of SOPU stood nearby, one assailant pulled out a pistol and fired two shots at him. Jawanda managed to dodge the bullets and seek cover, with police later recovering two empty shells from the scene.
The attackers fled on a scooter towards the backside of the Radha Krishan temple. Finding no exit route, they abandoned the scooter and forcibly entered the temple. When the priest attempted to stop them for wearing shoes, one attacker allegedly pointed a gun at him, issuing a warning to remain silent. The duo then exited the temple complex and, at gunpoint, confronted a couple near a private school in Sector 25, stealing a Bullet motorcycle to make their escape.
This arrest marks a crucial step in addressing the security concerns raised by the incident, with authorities continuing their probe to ensure all involved parties are brought to justice.
