Odisha Businessman Stranded for 18 Hours at Dubai Airport Amid Regional Unrest
Debakant Bhuyan, a businessman based in Odisha who frequently travels between East and West Asian markets for trade deals, anticipated another routine transit through Dubai. Instead, he found himself trapped at Dubai International Airport for nearly 18 hours as the region descended into turmoil, leaving thousands of passengers bewildered and anxious.
Sudden Chaos at the Airport
Bhuyan arrived in Dubai with plans to fly back to Odisha, but the situation deteriorated rapidly after reports of a missile attack spread through the city's travel infrastructure. Flight schedules became erratic, announcements grew repetitive, and queues lengthened dramatically. According to Bhuyan, approximately 50,000 passengers crowded the airport, creating a scene of confusion and distress.
"Anxious like me, many travellers attempted to rebook flights, confirm details, or simply comprehend what was unfolding," Bhuyan told TOI. "They explored safer alternatives even if they had intended to remain in the area."
Exhausting Uncertainty and Changing Updates
"I was at the airport when everything suddenly felt unstable—people were rushing, counters were overcrowded, and no one could provide clear information about when flights would resume," Bhuyan recounted. "I continuously checked for updates, but the status kept shifting. It was utterly exhausting."
As the hours stretched on, Bhuyan sought a safer and quieter location to wait. He hurried from the airport to a nearby hotel, hoping to rest and reassess his options, but the pervasive uncertainty followed him.
Seeking Shelter Amid Tension
"After the missile attack, I did not feel comfortable staying in open areas for extended periods, although I did not witness the explosion myself," he explained. "I relocated to a hotel near the airport, but the atmosphere remained tense, and I still lacked a confirmed departure plan."
With no immediate flight available, Bhuyan ultimately found refuge at a friend's residence in zone-3, a residential area situated between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. He traveled by car with his friend to reach this safer zone.
Waiting for Normalcy to Return
"Currently, I have no choice but to wait until flights resume from Dubai airport," Bhuyan stated. "My sole desire is to return to Odisha, but everything hinges on when operations normalize again."
The broader regional context included reports of Israel attacking Iran, claims from Iranian state media about a US F-15 fighter jet being downed in Kuwait with a video showing the aircraft engulfed in flames and pilots ejecting, explosions noted in Bahrain, Dubai, and Doha, Israel bombing Hezbollah targets in Beirut, and Gulf nations vowing to defend themselves. These events collectively contributed to the travel disruptions and heightened anxieties experienced by passengers like Bhuyan.
