Odia Diaspora Leader Calls for Evacuation Plan as West Asia Crisis Escalates
In a significant move highlighting the growing concerns among the Indian community abroad, Arun Kumar Praharaj, the founder chairman of Bahrain Odia Samaj and founder director of the Foundation of Global Odia Diaspora, has formally written to the Indian Embassy in Bahrain. His letter urgently requests the development of a comprehensive evacuation plan for Indian nationals residing in the region, amid the ongoing and volatile crisis in West Asia involving conflicts such as the Israel-Iran tensions.
Rising Distress and Safety Concerns Prompt Action
In an email addressed to Vinod K Jacob, the Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Bahrain, Praharaj expressed appreciation for the Bahrain defence forces' efforts in intercepting aerial threats, describing them as "commendable". However, he emphasized that the psychological and social toll on the Indian community is intensifying due to prolonged airspace closures and disruptions to essential services. Praharaj warned that further destabilization could compromise the safety of many individuals, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Currently, Praharaj is hosting eight families who have been relocated from Juffair, as residents have not been cleared to return following heightened fears of a breakdown in local order. This personal involvement highlights the immediate and tangible impacts of the crisis on everyday lives.
Detailed Evacuation Proposals Outlined
In his communication, Praharaj outlined several critical backup plans for the embassy to consider, aiming to ensure the safe exit of Indian nationals. These proposals include:
- Securing diplomatic clearance for Indian nationals to transit through Saudi Arabia, providing an alternative route for evacuation.
- Arranging direct evacuation flights to India, specifically tailored to handle large-scale movements in emergency scenarios.
- Implementing a phased land-border evacuation plan that prioritizes vulnerable groups such as families, the elderly, children, and those who have lost their jobs due to the crisis.
Additionally, he urged the establishment of defined security protocols to protect Indian nationals if civil unrest restricts movement towards border points, ensuring that evacuation efforts are not hindered by local instability.

Praharaj concluded his letter by reaffirming the Odia community's commitment to following embassy directives but stressed that the unpredictability of the situation and the absence of a clear exit strategy are causing extreme distress. He called for proactive measures to ensure community safety before unforeseen events make movement impossible, highlighting the need for swift and decisive action from Indian authorities.
