A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Kerala is set to complete the framing of charges against the accused in the infamous 2010 hand-chopping case on May 15. The case, which dates back over a decade, involves the brutal chopping off of a professor's hand, allegedly by members of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI).
New Arrest in the Case
The NIA recently arrested a key accused identified as Shafeer. According to investigators, Shafeer allegedly arranged shelter and provided logistical support to the main accused, Savad, at Chakkad and Mattannur in Kannur district since 2020. This arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the long-pending investigation.
Background of the Case
The hand-chopping incident occurred in 2010, when a college professor was attacked and his hand was severed, sparking widespread outrage across the country. The case was initially investigated by local police but was later transferred to the NIA due to its sensitive nature and potential links to extremist groups.
The NIA has been conducting a thorough probe, leading to the identification and arrest of multiple suspects over the years. The upcoming court session on May 15 is expected to formally outline the charges against all accused individuals, paving the way for a trial.
Legal Proceedings
The special NIA court, which handles cases related to terrorism and national security, will oversee the framing of charges. This legal step is crucial as it specifies the exact offenses each accused is charged with, allowing the defense to prepare their arguments. The court has set a strict timeline to ensure the case progresses without further delays.
Authorities have assured that all necessary evidence has been gathered and that the accused will be given a fair trial. The NIA continues to investigate any remaining leads to ensure justice is served.
