Nagpur Lok Adalat Successfully Settles 56 Cases Involving 105 Crore Rupees

The National Lok Adalat, held at the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court on Saturday, achieved significant success by settling 56 cases with a total value of 105 crore rupees. This initiative was organized by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) in collaboration with the High Court Legal Services Sub-Committee in Nagpur, aiming to provide an alternative dispute resolution mechanism for pending legal matters.

Wide Range of Cases Addressed and Compensation Awarded

A total of 240 matters were listed for hearing during the Lok Adalat, covering a diverse array of legal disputes. These included Motor Accident Claim petitions, land acquisition appeals, arbitration appeals, and family disputes. Out of these, 56 cases were amicably settled through mutual agreement between the parties involved.

Notably, compensation worth 5.8 crore rupees was awarded to claimants in disputes specifically related to national highway projects. This highlights the Lok Adalat's role in addressing complex issues that often involve substantial financial stakes and public infrastructure concerns.

Historic 1989 Motor Accident Case Finally Resolved

Among the most significant resolutions was a motor accident compensation appeal that had been pending since 1989. The case originated from a tragic road accident involving a 10-year-old boy. Initially, the parents approached the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, which awarded compensation of 30,000 rupees.

Dissatisfied with this amount, the claimants later filed an appeal before the High Court seeking an enhancement of the compensation. The matter was eventually referred to the Lok Adalat for resolution. In a positive outcome, the insurance company agreed to pay 3 lakh rupees, bringing a long-standing legal battle to a close after over three decades.

Judicial Encouragement for Alternative Dispute Resolution

Nagpur bench administrative judge Anil Kilor made a strong appeal to litigants, urging them to take advantage of the Lok Adalat initiative. He emphasized the benefits of this alternative dispute resolution mechanism, which can save time, reduce legal costs, and foster amicable settlements without the prolonged adversarial process of traditional court proceedings.

The success of this Lok Adalat session demonstrates the effectiveness of such programs in clearing backlogged cases and providing timely justice. It also underscores the collaborative efforts between NALSA and the High Court Legal Services Sub-Committee in promoting access to justice for all citizens.
