Alok Singh, a 32-year-old lecturer at NM College in Vile Parle, lost his life after being stabbed during a dispute on a local train. The attack occurred as he was returning home from work, casting a pall over what was supposed to be a celebratory day—his wife's birthday.
Victim's Background and Family Connections
Alok Singh, a resident of Kurar Village in Malad (east), had deep roots in the city, having lived there since childhood with his uncle, Sunil Kumar Singh, a retired BMC schoolteacher. His educational journey included schooling at Gyanodaya Vidya Mandir High School and Ismail Yusuf College in Jogeshwari, followed by BSc and MSc degrees from Mumbai University. Entering the teaching profession seven to eight years ago, he began at an international school in Andheri, later earning his BEd and clearing the state's Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). Before his permanent appointment at NM College last year, he taught mathematics at a Malad-based college for Class 11 and 12 students.
Notably, Alok's father, Anil Kumar Singh, serves as part of the security detail for Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. At the time of the incident, Anil was in Delhi for Republic Day parade preparations and rushed to Mumbai upon hearing the tragic news. The family, originally from Uttar Pradesh, has strong ties to public service, with Alok's elder brother also working as a government servant in Lucknow.

On the day of the stabbing, Alok had planned a dinner outing with his wife to mark her birthday. He left college after work, informing colleagues of his plans, and was accompanied by his colleague Sudhir Trivedi, with whom he often traveled. The altercation erupted on the train, reportedly when Alok asked another passenger not to rush while disembarking, as a woman was standing nearby. This seemingly minor request escalated into a violent confrontation, leading to the fatal stabbing around 5:50 PM.
Family's Anguish and Allegations
Outside Bhagawati Hospital mortuary, where Alok's body was kept for postmortem, his father expressed profound grief and frustration. "The accused is caught, and Defence Minister sir ensured me that he has spoken to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra to ensure strict action," Anil Kumar Singh stated. He contrasted the response with that in Uttar Pradesh, suggesting harsher measures might have been taken there.
Family members highlighted a troubling delay in medical assistance, alleging that Alok was not taken to the hospital until 7 PM, nearly an hour after the attack. "His postmortem report states that death is due to heavy loss of blood, which means if timely medical intervention was ensured, he could have been saved," a relative lamented. They also emphasized the senselessness of the violence, noting that train arguments are common in Mumbai but rarely involve weapons.

The incident has sparked outrage and calls for accountability. Relatives described Alok as a promising young man from a family of educators, with teaching being a shared profession.
