Mumbai Mother Files Police Complaint After Beggar Attempts to Kidnap Her 9-Year-Old Daughter
A 40-year-old woman in Mumbai has registered a formal police complaint against a beggar for allegedly attempting to kidnap her nine-year-old daughter. The incident, which occurred on March 21, highlights the importance of child vigilance and community response in urban safety matters.
Incident Details: A Mother's Terrifying Ordeal
The complainant, who works as a domestic maid, had sent her daughter to deliver kheer to a friend's house in the Bhagat Singh Nagar slum area of Goregaon (West) around 7 pm. After becoming preoccupied with her duties, she received a distressing phone call from her daughter stating she was lost and unable to locate the friend's residence.
The mother immediately instructed her child to wait at the spot and contacted her friend, requesting her to go and assist the girl. However, moments later, she received another urgent call urging her to come down immediately as her daughter was crying uncontrollably.
Quick-Thinking Child Prevents Potential Tragedy
Upon reaching the location, the mother found a large crowd gathered around her daughter. The nine-year-old explained that a beggar named Chanda, who had visited their home earlier that same day, had been following her and suddenly grabbed her hand, insisting she accompany her for food.
Displaying remarkable presence of mind, the child stopped a nearby stranger and requested him to call her mother immediately. This quick thinking alerted the community and prevented what could have been a tragic outcome.
Community Response and Police Action
The gathered public promptly dialed the police emergency number '100' and detained Chanda for inquiry. Authorities have registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on the mother's complaint and are conducting a thorough investigation into the attempted kidnapping.
This incident serves as a crucial reminder for parents and guardians about the importance of:
- Teaching children emergency response protocols
- Maintaining awareness of surroundings in crowded urban areas
- Fostering community vigilance and rapid response mechanisms
Police officials have emphasized the need for increased patrolling in residential and slum areas, particularly during evening hours when such incidents are more likely to occur. The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the beggar's motives and whether there are any connections to broader criminal activities.
