A late-night hit-and-run accident on a busy Pune road has resulted in one fatality and left another person injured. The tragic incident occurred on Monday night, snuffing out the life of a young man and highlighting the dangers of reckless driving on city streets.
Details of the Tragic Collision
The victim has been identified as Bhushan Ahirrao, aged 35, a resident of Manjari Budruk. He was riding a motorcycle with his younger brother, Pankaj Ahirrao (32), on the pillion. The brothers were returning home to Manjari Budruk after finishing their work at a commercial establishment in Mundhwa. The accident took place around 10:30 pm on Monday on the Manjari-Mundhwa road near Keshavnagar.
According to the Mundhwa police, a dumper truck rammed into their motorcycle from the rear. The impact was severe. Bhushan Ahirrao succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His brother Pankaj, fortunately, escaped with minor injuries. The police stated that the truck driver showed complete negligence by neither slowing down nor applying brakes before the collision, endangering the lives of other road users.
Police Investigation and Fleeing Driver
In a callous act, the driver of the dumper truck fled the spot immediately after the crash, leaving the injured brothers on the road. The following day, on Tuesday, the injured brother, Pankaj Ahirrao, lodged a formal complaint with the Mundhwa police.
Senior Inspector Smita Wasnik of the Mundhwa police station provided details of the ongoing investigation. "The truck driver fled from the scene after hitting the motorcycle," she confirmed. The police are now scouring for evidence to track down the perpetrator. "We are studying CCTV camera footage of the spot to ascertain the registration number of the truck to trace its driver and owner," Senior Inspector Wasnik told reporters. This footage is crucial for identifying the vehicle and holding the responsible parties accountable.
Community Impact and Road Safety Concerns
This incident has sent shockwaves through the local community in Manjari Budruk and Mundhwa. It underscores a persistent and grave issue of road safety in Pune, particularly involving heavy vehicles like dumper trucks. Hit-and-run cases not only inflict immediate tragedy but also compound the suffering of victims' families by delaying justice.
The police investigation is now focused on a few key areas:
- Analyzing all available CCTV footage from the accident site and surrounding areas.
- Identifying the registration number and owner of the involved dumper truck.
- Launching a manhunt for the driver who abandoned the victims.
The death of Bhushan Ahirrao is a stark reminder of the consequences of negligent driving. As the police continue their search, the community awaits answers and hopes for swift action to prevent such senseless loss of life on Pune's roads in the future.
