Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is once again at the center of a controversy within his party after a social media post on Kashmir drew sharp criticism from fellow party members. The Thiruvananthapuram MP posted on X (formerly Twitter) questioning the government's handling of the Kashmir situation, which some Congress leaders interpreted as deviating from the party's official stance.
Fresh Controversy Erupts
The post, made on June 21, 2026, stated: "The people of Kashmir deserve peace and normalcy, but the heavy-handed approach continues to alienate them. We must rethink our strategy." Within hours, several Congress leaders, including those from the Jammu and Kashmir unit, accused Tharoor of undermining the party's position on the region. Senior Congress leader and former minister P. L. Punia said, "Tharoor's comments are irresponsible and do not reflect the party's view. He should refrain from making such statements."
This is not the first time Tharoor has faced flak from his own party. In 2024, he was reprimanded for praising a book by a BJP leader, and in 2025, his remarks on the Agnipath scheme led to a similar uproar. The recurring pattern has led to questions about internal discipline within Congress.
Party Leadership's Response
The Congress high command has so far remained silent on the issue, but sources indicate that the party's disciplinary committee may take up the matter. A senior party functionary, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "Tharoor is a valuable asset, but he must learn to toe the party line. Repeated deviations harm the party's image." Tharoor, however, has defended his post, stating that he was merely expressing concern for the people of Kashmir and not criticizing the party. "My commitment to the Congress is unwavering. I only seek to highlight the humanitarian aspect," he said in a statement.
Impact on Party Unity
The incident comes at a critical time for Congress, which is gearing up for assembly elections in several states next year. Analysts say that internal bickering could weaken the party's electoral prospects. Political commentator Neerja Chowdhury noted, "Congress cannot afford such distractions. The party needs to present a united front, especially on sensitive issues like Kashmir."
Social media reactions have been mixed, with some supporting Tharoor's right to free speech and others criticizing him for indiscipline. The hashtag #TharoorControversy trended briefly on X, with over 50,000 posts within 24 hours.
As the party grapples with this latest episode, all eyes are on the Congress leadership to see how it handles the situation. Will it take disciplinary action, or will it let the matter slide? The answer could set a precedent for future internal dissent.
