Mohali 2025: A Year of Crime Surge, High-Profile Murders & Police Pressure
Mohali's Turbulent 2025: Murders, Snatchings, Drugs

As the year 2025 drew to a close, the district of Mohali was left to reckon with a period of significant turbulence, characterized by a sharp rise in violent crimes, sensational investigations, and unyielding pressure on its law enforcement agencies. The relentless pace of murders, snatchings, and thefts kept the police force in a constant state of high alert throughout the twelve months.

High-Profile Cases and Political Arrests Shake the District

The year's most shocking incident was the murder of prominent kabaddi promoter Rana Balachauria, which also left his aide injured. This case, along with the murder of a former Additional Advocate General's wife, sent shockwaves across the district and captured statewide attention. The gravity of the investigation was underscored when the Punjab and Haryana High Court summoned the Director General of Police (DGP), highlighting the intense scrutiny on the police probe.

Adding a significant political dimension to the year's events, senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia was arrested in a disproportionate assets case. This high-profile arrest ensured that investigative agencies remained firmly in the public spotlight.

Official Crime Numbers Paint a Grim Picture

The official data for 2025 reveals the stark reality of the crime surge. The district recorded a total of 32 murders, with police arresting 59 accused individuals. However, four of these murder cases remain unsolved, raising pertinent questions about detection rates and investigative efficacy.

Snatching incidents became a major source of insecurity for residents, with a staggering 165 cases registered. In response, police claimed to have arrested 160 snatchers during the year. Vehicle theft also saw a concerning increase, with 65 cars and 307 vehicles, including two-wheelers, reported stolen. Furthermore, the district witnessed 12 firing incidents, pointing towards the activities of organized crime networks and personal vendettas.

Relentless Crackdown on Drug Menace

Amid the wave of crime, the Mohali police continued its vigorous campaign against narcotics as part of Punjab's wider anti-drug drive. The enforcement actions led to the arrest of 636 alleged smugglers and 729 addicts. Many of those addicted were directed towards rehabilitation programs. The police also conducted dope tests, which confirmed substance abuse among a significant number of offenders, linking drug use directly to criminal activities.

The collective data from 2025 presents a district grappling with multifaceted law and order challenges, setting a demanding agenda for the police and administration in the year to come.
