A shocking and brutal hit-and-run incident in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur district on Thursday resulted in the horrific death of a young man, who was trapped in a car's bumper and dragged for nearly ten kilometres. The victim, identified as 25-year-old Anil from Chakkiya Ganeshpur in Chandauli district, died on the spot, his body mutilated beyond recognition.
The Horrific Sequence of Events
The tragedy unfolded around 1:30 PM near Bhuili village. According to police, about 300 people had gathered by the roadside for a blanket distribution event. A speeding car, passing through the area, suddenly lost control and rammed into a parked scooter near the crowd. Anil was on the scooter, on his way to drop his 35-year-old sister, Laxmina, at her in-laws' house in Naudiha Sherwa.
In the violent impact, the two-wheeler fell, but Anil became trapped in the rear bumper of the car. Despite frantic shouts from bystanders alerting the driver that a person was stuck, the driver allegedly accelerated and sped away towards Sherwa, dragging the helpless rider along the road.
A Gruesome 10-Kilometre Drag and Public Fury
The prolonged friction with the road surface over the 10-kilometre stretch caused catastrophic injuries. Police reported that the skin and flesh on Anil's back were completely scraped off. The lower half of his body was rendered unrecognisable, with one leg reduced to bare bone and an arm severed. He was declared dead instantly.
Enraged locals witnessed the dragging and gave chase to the fleeing vehicle. The car, which had a Lucknow registration number and bore a 'Police' sticker, eventually overturned near Nandpur village. This secondary crash injured at least ten people. The driver, however, abandoned the overturned vehicle and managed to escape from the scene.
Investigation Launched, Accident on the Run
Police have seized the car and registered a case. Officials stated they are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas and recording witness statements to trace and apprehend the accused driver. Meanwhile, the pillion rider, Laxmina, sustained injuries in the initial collision and was hospitalised for treatment.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the region, highlighting grave concerns over road safety and reckless driving. The use of a car with a police sticker has added a serious dimension to the investigation, as authorities work to identify the culprit behind this appalling act.
