Inmate Dies by Suicide in Mathura Jail Amid Bail Denial Distress
A 57-year-old inmate, who was being tried under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and had been lodged in Mathura's district jail for nearly a year, allegedly died by suicide early Thursday. The incident has raised concerns about the mental health and legal delays faced by undertrial prisoners in the region.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Jail superintendent Anshuman Garg reported that the incident occurred around 2 am. The inmate, identified as Suresh Kumar, went inside the barrack's toilet and did not return for nearly 10 minutes. A fellow inmate serving as a makeshift night guard went to check and found Kumar hanging. The guard immediately alerted jail constables outside, who then informed senior officials.
Following the discovery, authorities conducted an inspection of the barrack and questioned other inmates. Preliminary investigations suggest that Kumar was under significant stress after his bail hearing in a higher court on March 24 could not proceed. Earlier, his bail application had been denied by a court in Mathura, adding to his distress.
Background and Legal Struggles
Suresh Kumar, a resident of Mathura and unmarried, was arrested last year after a prohibited substance was found in his possession. He had been in prison due to a case registered at the Govardhan police station under the NDPS Act. Over the past year, Kumar had changed lawyers at least four times, indicating his desperation to secure bail and be released.
Call records from the prison PCO revealed that Kumar had spoken to his family on Wednesday, March 25. During the conversation, he repeatedly urged them to consult a proper lawyer to "get him out," highlighting his growing anxiety and hopelessness.
Official Response and Investigation
Jail superintendent Anshuman Garg stated, "A detailed investigation will be conducted in the matter to ascertain all facts and circumstances surrounding this tragic event." The authorities are examining the inmate's mental state, the legal proceedings, and the overall conditions in the jail to prevent such incidents in the future.
This case underscores the broader issues of prolonged legal processes and the psychological impact on undertrial prisoners, especially those facing charges under stringent laws like the NDPS Act. It calls for a review of bail mechanisms and mental health support within correctional facilities.
