Man beaten to death in Guwahati after mistaken identity

A tragic case of mistaken identity led to the fatal assault of a 35-year-old man at a private resort in Guwahati on Sunday. The victim, identified as Farzul Alam from Tezpur, Assam, was severely beaten by a group of people who wrongly believed he was a thief.

Details of the Fatal Assault

The incident unfolded at a resort located in the Sonapur area of Kamrup (Metropolitan) district. According to the Sonapur police, Alam had gone to the resort seeking shelter. Employees of the establishment, however, grew suspicious of his presence. Based solely on his appearance, they allegedly concluded he was a thief.

Officer-in-charge of Sonapur police station, Manuj Boruah, stated that the employees confronted Alam and initiated the assault. The situation rapidly escalated as others joined in. Despite Alam's repeated attempts to explain himself, the group continued to beat him severely. After the attack, the resort staff informed the police and led them to Alam, who was found unconscious at the scene.

Police Action and Legal Proceedings

Following the incident, police swiftly arrested seven individuals connected to the attack. Those arrested have been named as Mustafizur Haque (Sipajhar), Chitra Das (Mayong), Ram Sonar (Tinsukia), Sushil Nath (Sivasagar), Stayojit Haloi (Tihu), Ranjit Brahma (Baksa), and Manab Roy (Mayong), who is also a director of the resort.

A case has been registered under Section 103(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to murder committed by a mob. The accused were produced before a local court on Sunday, and the police have sought their remand for further investigation.

Victim Succumbs to Injuries

Farzul Alam was first rushed to Sonapur Hospital after the brutal assault. Due to the critical nature of his injuries, he was later referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Despite all efforts by medical professionals to stabilise him, Alam succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The police investigation is currently ongoing. Authorities are examining CCTV footage from the resort premises, recording statements from witnesses, and gathering other evidence to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to this unfortunate death.
